Would Technology Help?
I have a student in a class I work in that is a frequent behavior problem. "Dave" constantly disrupts during group time; he can't keep his body still and his mouth is always running. But Dave does pay attention, he can always repeat the directions to the teacher when asked, even though throughout the lesson he is usually half upside-down. Dave is obviously bored, but he needs the information being taught in the lesson. It is not the content that Jack finds uninteresting, it is the medium. Technology would be an asset to Dave, but the school uses very little. I can foresee this attention problem plaguing Dave throughout the rest of his schooling.

I was in a classroom this week with a second grader who needed to "dance" to work. Thankfully the teacher just let him stand at a desk and dance away. I suggested a taller desk that might make him more comfortable, but no other accommodation was needed. I also saw many teachers with totally flexible seating options. The goal is to let kids be comfortable in their learning...

I think that Dave may not need accommodations during the lesson to try and pay attention. Maybe he just finds the lessons boring. The teacher could use more technology in the classroom to make her lessons interesting, like a smart board or even the internet. If the teacher spiced up her lessons a little bit then maybe Dave would pay more attention. By using a little bit of technology students could use the internet to explore different aspects of the topic to find something about that subject that interested them. The teacher could also use the computer as a motivational tool to get Dave to pay attention in class.
